Governor Phil Murphy today signed a bill (S-2364) to extend extended permissions for restaurants, bars, distilleries and breweries to use facilities and equipment that allow them to serve customers outdoors in private areas, on sidewalks and in other areas designated by the municipality. outdoor spaces. The authorisations, which were due to expire on November 30, 2022, will now be extended for a further two years.

“My Administration has worked collaboratively with the Legislative Assembly to support the restaurant industry and its customers by expanding outdoor dining during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are continuing that support today by extending these expanded permits for dining establishments across our state,” Governor Murphy said. “The continuation of this successful practice will not only benefit small business owners, but also the many customers who come to enjoy the atmosphere and outdoor dining opportunities.”

Today’s legislation, which has been backed by the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), will allow the continued use of props such as tents, canopies, umbrellas, tables and chairs for outdoor dining until November 30, 2024, extending a law that was signed by the governor in February 2021.

According to NJBIA Director of Government Affairs, Chrissy Buteas, “The association has been a consistent and vocal supporter of legislation throughout COVID-19 to provide that much-needed flexibility to our restaurant and hospitality industry. which has been affected in the last two years”.

The governor signed the bill at Vesta Wood-Fired, a local restaurant that received a grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority under the state’s Small Business Emergency Relief Program to support local New Jersey businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Legislation signed today by Governor Murphy once again demonstrates his continued commitment to supporting businesses across the state as they emerge from the pandemic and move from survival to thriving,” the director said.
